High School football is evolving right before our eyes and we have been given the gift of living during these exciting times. The popularity of the prep gridiron game has reached heights that many analysts could have never imagined only a decade ago. The days of teams and their superstars living in anonymity are years gone by. Turn on your television most any week of the season and see 2 or 3 games a week being played by America's premier programs. Games such as the "Backyard Bowl" between Jenks and Tulsa Union draw crowds in excess of 30,000 people. MTV created a reality TV show about Rush Propst and his Hoover Bucs and the dynasty he built in just 7 years. ESPN has Varsity Inc. which chronicles the progress of Louisiana powerhouse West Monroe. The NFL Network recently produced a feature based on the recruitment of 4 of America's top signal callers in 2006. High school football is a beacon of hope for many towns across America. Young men ply their trade against the best athletes from surrounding towns for the pride of their hometowns and the chance to call themselves champions. Athletes who have been groomed by their peers since childhood become Legends of the Fall and ultimately inscribe their names into the lore of their hometown programs. |
